Witkacy Pod Strzechy

The 24th International Contest of Interpretation of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz’s Works “Witkacy pod strzechy” has finished. Over three days tens of competitors have presented their works representing virtually all the fields of art.

A unified Protocol for the deicisons of the Eccentric Jury, the Honorary Jury and all the others who award prizes in the 24^th International Contest of Interpretation of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz’s Works “Witkacy pod strzechy” on the 18^th of September 2021.

The eccentric Jury Marek Średniawa decided to award the following prizes and distinctions.

An award in the amount of 2500 zloties funded by the National Centre for Culture for the theatrical group Krejzole – Warsztat Terapii Zajęciowej Koło in Słupsk for “Obrazki ruchomo-śpiewacze dla krzywaków i krzywaczek”, which prove, thet if you only want, you can overcome all barriers and limitations. Przemysław Laskowski with his pupils has once again fired a Witkacylike “highly explosive brand bullet calmly lying on a medow”. It is great that Witkacy has his people in Słupsk – way to go!

An award in the amount of 2000 zloties funded by the National Centre for Culture for Akademija za umjetnost i kulturu in Osijek (Croatia) for a superb performance „Matka” and a distinction in the amount of 500 zloties funded by the National Centre for Culture for Tatiana Bertok-Zupković for a courageous creation in the titular role. The jury is glad to find a high-class instalment by Witkacy in Croatian theatre.

The rest of the prizes were funded by the Ministry for Culture, National Heritage and Sport.

An award in the amount of 750 zloties for Kama Kuik from Puck for “Calendar autoportrait” – a continuation of the tradition set by the “Portrait Company” under their own conditions and in their own recognizable style.

An award in the amount of 750 zloties for the Yndywidualny Theatre from Bytów for a theatrical happening “Witkacy na cacy, na tacy czyli nie ma bata na butę buta bytu?”. We do not know if Witkacy during the “Abstanowka willowo-pałacowa” had the opportunity to talk in the Silesian dialect, but Andrzej Chłapecki has convinced us that it is possible. Thanks to the happening a possibility opened for expressing the thoughts and works of Witkacy in Kashubian and more.

A award in the amount of 750 zloties for Theatre in the Cinema from Darłowo for “Wariat i zakonnica, czyli nie ma tego złego, co by na jeszcze gorsze nie wyszło”. I appreciate the faithfulness to the original text and the author’s guidelines. The strengths of the performance were the roles of Walpurg, Sister Anna and Walldorff.

A distinction in the amount of 500 zloties for Anna Musialska from Ogrodzieniec, for a costume design for the titular characted of “Gyubal Wahazar”. An octopus if a valid metaphor of the unpredictable tyrant-dictator overwhelming, until some point in time, his subjects.

A distinction in the amount of 500 zloties goes to Kamil Macejko and Bartosz Giecewicz from Słupsk for the “Mam na imię Kamil” – a talk with the absent monologue. Honesty, authenticity, and distance towards oneself are the strength of said conversation.

A distinction in the amount of 500 zloties goes to Oliwia Pucek from Dąbrówka for “Spektakl bezosobowy” – a theatrical interpretation of her own text. I approve the courage and creativity of the author, who achieved a coherent link between her own text and a theatrical interpretation.

A distinction in the amount of 500 zloties goes to Akademia Teatru Młodego Aktora MDK from Barcino for “W małym dworku”. In deserves my recognition for the undertaking of realizing the play “as intended by the author” and with respect for the original text. It is a rarity of late.

A joined family distinction in the amount of 250 zloties goes to Julia Drąg for “Spotkanie ze śmiercią” – a story full of sensitivity and Marta Drąg for a comic, both from Tarnów Podgórny. I am glad that in this particular case, Witkacy nearly became a part of the family.

A distinction in the amount of 250 zloties for Katarzyna Wojciechowska from Łódź for “Ogólne zamieszanie” story, which proves that Witkacy is universal enough to serve a therapeutic function.

A distinction in the amount of 250 zloties for Dobrawa Szuwalska from Słupsk for “Pustkowie” and “Cisza” stories in which she proved her imagination and a sense for the climate of Witkacy’s works.

A distinction in the amount of 250 zloties for Dominika Liszkiewicz from Piła for a poem “Czysta Forma” in which she succeeded in joining Witkacy’s idea with concrete poetry.

A distinction in the amount of 250 zloties for Anna Pokora from Rumia for “Dobre rady wiedźmy spod szóstki”, a creative attempt to fictionalize a dramatical series of Witkacy’s drawings.

A distinction in the amount of 250 zloties for Jakub Krok from Kraków for an original attempt to create a historosophical play “Piknik” and consequence in seeking and building an own style.

A distinction in the amount of 250 zloties for Stanisław Pardo from Słupsk for a dissertation in modern spirit “Kalifornijska trzeźwość” inspired by “Narkotyki”.

A distinction in the amount of 250 zloties for Aleksandra Kalista from Szczecin for creative photography inspired by Witkacy’s works.

A distinction in the amount of 250 zloties for Maciej Rajewski from Warsaw for 2 out of 3 paintings – the ones actually inspired by Witkacy’s works.

A distinction in the amount of 250 zloties for Oliwia Żołnierczyk from Słupsk for creative photography “Kosmos Witkacego” inspired by Witkacy’s works.

A distinction in the amount of 250 zloties for Oliwia Grzelak from Słupsk for creative photography inspired by Witkacy’s works.

A distinction in the amount of 250 zloties for Maja Chrzan from Słupsk for creative photography inspired by Witkacy’s works.

A distinction in the amount of 250 zloties for Nina Prusak for a book project for “Narkotyki” and a poster for a play, which is representative of pure form, moderation, and elegance.

A distinction in the amount of 250 zloties funded by the Witkacy Institute goes to Lubomid Gromadzki from Rembetów for “Zaginione historie skrzatów” which creatively read into “Kompozycja Fantastyczna” painting.

The honorary Jury Maciej Witkiewicz decided to award the following prizes and distinctions.

A prize in the amount of 800 zloties for “Mam na imię Kamil” a talk with the absent monologue for Kamil Macejko and Bartosz Giecewicz from Słupsk who extraordinarily emotionally expressed the existential protest of a contemporary boy, youth, and man in the context of Słupsk’s and Witkacy’s ponderings.

A prize in the amount of 600 zloties for “Obrazki ruchomo-śpiewacza dla krzywaków I krzywaczek” for Grupa Teatralna Krejzole Warsztat Terapii Zajęciowej Koło in Słupsk. I appreciate the quaint moving-singiing pictures presented by Słupsk’s charming „skewed and warped”. Are they truely crooked by Witkacy’s banal lyrical texts in purely nonsensical style and form somewhat dirty or purified?

A prize in the amount of 550 zloties for Aleksandra Kalista from Szczecin for generally interesting creativity presented during this year’s contest. I particularly appreciate her “Krzyk o wolność” and not mawkish candy, but those without the painted texture.

A prize in the amount of 600 zloties for Oliwia Pucek from Dąbrówka, the author of “Wi-tkacze” is a subtle and very sensitive girl student of the second year of a High-School in Poznań which is visible in her often-poetic phrases in the presented text about interesting interpretation of expressing and creating art. It is a shame that this text conveyed theatrically was subjected to an impersonal form of play, in which it got lost in gymnastics-like bendings loosing base cohesion. Additionally, a weak voice without a clear acoustical range also blurred the worthy fragments inspired by Witkacy’s moods.

A prize in the amount of 600 zloties for Stanisław Pardo from Słupsk for “kalifornijska trzeźwość”. This specific auto-analysis of addictions inspired by witkacylike experiments, kept in a quasi-pure-form in reference to particular and singular facts…

A prize in the amount of 600 zloties for Julia Perzyńska-Wydrych – a student of third year in a High School in Szczecin for “Randka z Witkacym”. The poems are definitely inspired by Witkacy’s biography and reflections in a style he was known for.

A prize in the amount of 550 zloties for Mateusz Rymkiewicz from Częstochowa, a student of year 8 of primary school for a short play “Uwikłani”, “ku przestrodze” and for poems: “Proces”, “Udręka” undeniably neatly bowing to Witkacy.

A distinction in the amount of 300 zloties for Teatr Yndywidualny – Andrzej Chłapecki – Bytom. Granted, the meeting with this one-person theatre was soaked with witkacylike thought, however were they served in good taste? I would lightly say, without hurting the amount of work put in by Mr. Andrzej Chłapecki, that it was somewhat a monodrama “quite nice, but would be better with ice”. Too many elements, trifles, trinkets, and forced acting in a way killed the spirit of the message, which seemed to be strongly fatigued with the rust of unnecessary fireworks. However, I am acknowledging this performance as an example of form over function leaning towards positive actions…

A distinction in the amount of 300 zloties for Akademia Teatru Młodego AKtora MDK in Barcino for “W małym dworku”. Unfortunately, it often happens that the ambitions of instructors are too high for the abilities of the youth under their care. In order to play at Witkacy’s theatre you can successfully compile fragments of his plays and appropriately cast them, adequately to psycho-physical abilities of young actors instead of patching-up the cast in an artificial way, which happened in this presentation. I admire the ambition of this youth and the effort in learning the entire text of this play and that is why award them this modest distinction…

A distinction in the amount of 100 zloties for Rafał Pawłowski from Słupsk for “Glątwa”. The foundation of this performance was surely very interesting, however absolutely not working in the times of the continuing pandemic situation. A simple script: a mysterious person clad in cosmic-covid gold overalls treats specific spectators to 40% plum brandy dedicated to Witkacy. The treated were given selected aphorisms from Witkacy, especially concerning the titular “Glątwa”. Because it is difficult to be hangover after one glass, the author of the fun emptied the bottle himself all the while experiencing some kind of specific katzenjammer expressed by gradual undressing of himself. It was generally rather pleasant, however just awkwardly indistinct. That is why I am awarding this modest distinction in the amount of 100 zloties as a refund for the cost of alcohol, which did not induce this “Glątwa” leaving a certain lack…

The members of the Słupsk’s Branch of the Theatrical Culture Society – Rondo Theatre decide to award:

Prizes in the amount of 250 zloties each funded by the Ministry for Culture, National Heritage and Sport to the creators of the word and sound conversation titled “Mam na imię Kamil” Bartosz Giecewicz and Kamil Maciejka.

A prize in the amount of 250 zloties funded by the Ministry for Culture, National Heritage and Sport for Maja Chrzan, for photography works titled “Spojrzenia”.

A prize in the amount of 250 zloties funded by the Ministry for Culture, National Heritage and Sport for artistic guidance during the realisation of the illustration of film etudes titled “Obrazki ruchomo-śpiewacza dla krzywaków I krzywaczek” Przemysław Laskowski.

And

A special prize in the amount of 1000 zloties funded by the Ministry for Culture, National Heritage and Sport for inspiring next generations of photographers to work with Witkacy’s art. Witkacy owed the ability to photograph to his father, who talked with him about the pictures and reviewed each photo. This role for the participants of the photography classes is undertaken by Jadwiga Girsa-Zimna – a photography instructor, photographer documenting everyday life during the festival for years and doing so with sensitivity and care. This unique event allows a meeting of creators who dabble in all artistic fields. It matters not if you are a pro on the stage or a beginner painter, writer, performer, or lecturer. If creations, philosophy or Witkacy’s life inspire your artistic search we would like to invite you to take part in this year’s “Witkacy pod strzechy” J

We can finally announce it!!!

The number of applications we have received this year has exceeded our boldest expectations.
